Cleveland, Ohio, located on the shores of Lake Erie, is a rust belt city undergoing a renaissance transforming into a green belt city. Cleveland has a generous nonprofit community and innovative community development corporations which continues in efforts to provide services to vulnerable and underserved populations. Notre Dame AmeriCorps partners with the Humility of Mary Volunteer Service (HMVS) to provide service opportunities in Cleveland and surrounding communities in Northeast Ohio.

Boys Hope Girls Hope
Boys Hope Girls Hope provides stability, support, and scholarship to bright and motivated children from challenging circumstances. The time-tested Residential Program contends that the combination of a quality education, a safe and secure home, and a consistent routine will provide the young people BHGH serves with the values and opportunities they need to realize and achieve their full potential. The model has also been expanded to include a non-residential outreach program serving middle school students from under-resourced schools.
Notre Dame AmeriCorps member serve by facilitating scholars' participation in after-school activities, tutoring and providing assistance with homework and school projects, setting benchmarks of achievement for the scholars, and acting as a positive adult mentor and role model.
Metro Catholic School - Green Program
Metro Catholic School serves 565 students from Preschool to Grade 8 on two campuses. It is the only Cleveland Catholic elementary school with extensive programs to assist refugee students and those with cognitive learning disabilities. Metro Catholic has also been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Green Ribbon School, an honor given to schools who demonstrate efforts toward sustainability and environmental education.
The NDA-HM member serves as Coordinator for the Integration of Environmental Learning. Among other projects, the member works to engage all students in an age-appropriate experience of growing and tending living plants in the school's garden.
West Side Community House - Sisterhood Program
The West Site Community House (WSCH) works to meet the needs of community residents by providing an array of model programs and services for children, families, and older adults. Its programs strengthen the family, provide opportunities to learn and grow, support independent living, encourage economic self-sufficiency, and renew the life spirit.
The NDA-HM member serves as an assistant with with Sisterhood, an after-school and summer arts program for girls ages 10-18. Throughout the school year the girls participate in a range of cultural, educational and social programs that integrate arts and creativity with five specific themes: self-identity, service learning, arts and technology, economic literacy, and health and wellness. During the summer Sisterhood focuses on a specific arts project designed to teach the girls how creative expression can transform a community and positively impact public perception.
Blessing House serves as a safety net for children of families in crisis by providing a temporary safe home for children and support for their families. The NDA-HM member supports families as part of a respite program to keep the children in school while parents address critical issues due to health problems, incarceration or unemployment.
HMVS in Florida
We have limited sites in Immokalee,Florida. Immokalee site invites HM Volunteers to serve the social outreach and education needs of families residing in Immokalee. It’s not just one site but a community in which you serve. Guadalupe Center is an educational outreach program within the Immokalee schools. Catholic Charities Guadalupe Social Services is an outreach to adults learning English. Redlands Christian Migrant Association (RCMA) has outreach to pre-school and school age children as well as their families.
