South Central LAMP illuminates the path out of poverty, using education as a tool to empower children and families of South Central Los Angeles. Family Literacy programs are offered free of charge to over 200 children and families. The member at LAMP serves as either an early childhood education teacher or a Reading is Fundamental Coordinator.

Brother Miguel Center, is a Catholic Charities poverty center that serves the greater Pomona communities. The center provides a basic needs assistance program to homeless and low-income individuals and families. Services include emergency food, clothing, emergency shelter through motel vouchers and housing placement assistance. NDA member will assist with administering emergency assistance programs, implement housing assistance program, conduct periodic home visits, and participate in community meetings/events.

St. Columbkille School is located in south Los Angeles. The school serves students in grades K-8, many of whom are from immigrant families and have limited English ability. An NDA member will serve as classroom aide in primary grades, assist regular staff as yard duty supervisor, provide after-school homework help, and use specific talents in coordinating and organizing after-school enrichment activities. Member may occasionally be asked to substitute in the classroom.

St. Julie Learning Center is a Library/Computer Center and is the school library for St. Columbkille School and an outreach center for the community. The center offers the library, ESL classes for adults, computer/internet use, homework assistance, and both student and community enrichment programs. The Notre Dame AmeriCorps volunteer will assist with these various classes and coordinate services at the St. Julie Learning Center.

St. Margaret's Center, Lennox, CA, is a Catholic Charities community center that serves the airport area of Los Angeles. The center provides a comprehensive range of emergency and supportive services to individuals and families who live at or below the federal poverty level. The Center's goal is to provide relief, dignity, and support. The Center does this by providing emergency food, shelter, rent assistance, clothing, and household supplies. The Center also assists individuals through case management and skills development to become more self-sufficient and to achieve economic security. About 70% of the clientele is Latino, 25% African American, with the other 5% of other races. NDA member's responsibilities include tutoring adults in literacy, ESL, and Basic living skills in small groups or one on one. Also members will assist with administering emergency assistance programs, provide case management to poverty level persons, and create programs with director's supervision. Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus!

Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to present youth with positive adult role models. They match youth with mentors who will provide a constructive and satisfying relationship. Members will review prospective mentee applicants and their families, conduct group meetings for families and volunteers, and assist in the assignment of mentor/mentee matches among other duties. Qualified members will have an understanding of Child Development, Family Dynamics, Volunteer Services and the ability to constructively integrate this knowledge into their practice. They should possess good communications skills and speak Spanish fluently. Some college experience or bachelors degree with relevant experience with children and volunteers is required.

St. Thomas the Apostle School works with grades K-8. This school is located in the heart of central Los Angeles and in 2004 celebrated 100 years of Catholic education. The NDA member will be a teacher’s assistant in Kindergarten. An additional member will assist as a reading specialist for struggling readers in grades 6th -8th. Members will also assist as Lunch Duty Supervisor, with after-school tutoring , and enrichment activities.

Nativity School is a Catholic elementary school in south Los Angeles. Nativity School provides quality Catholic education to its 320 students from Pre-K through 8th grades. The School population is 92% Hispanic and 8% Black. Besides a fine academic curriculum with an emphasis on faith development, Nativity School offers an after-school sports program, computer program, music program, day care and counseling services.
NDA service Description:
Library – Grades 4 through 8: Duties include cataloging library books, maintaining the library, issuing and collecting library books in collaboration with teachers.
Homework Club – Assist students with homework assignments after school.
Other possibilities depending on circumstance and the member’s talents and interests:
Direct students in grades 4-8 in the computer lab in collaboration with teachers
Direct students in grades K-3 in computer lab in collaboration with teachers
Maintain the K-3 grade library, issue and collect library books in collaboration with teachers.

SAN FRANCISCO AND BAY AREA

A cultural icon, San Francisco is a site of multicultural service opportunities. Members typically tutor, assistant teach, promote literacy, lead after-school programs, and reach out for parental involvement. One member also works with incarcerated inmates in GED training and preparation.

John Gill and Fair Oaks Schools in Redwood City, Calif., are multicultural elementary schools located in a low-income area. One-on-one and small group tutoring activities are provided to improve the students' academic skills. After-school enrichment programs and parental involvement in the students' education are encouraged. NDA members' responsibilities include tutoring students, assisting classroom teachers, and participating in after-school programs.

Mission Dolores and St. Anthony Schools are inner-city schools for children in grades K-8. The students are primarily Hispanic, Asian, and Anglo-Americans. Over 50% of the children are from single-parent families. One-on-one and small group tutoring activities are provided to improve the students’ academic skills. After-school enrichment programs and parental involvement in the students’ education are encouraged. NDA members’ responsibilities include tutoring students, assisting classroom teachers, and participating in after-school programs. Project Read in Redwood City, Calif., is a public library program providing tutoring, dropout prevention services, and critical thinking skills for children and adults. After-school enrichment programs for children using various methods including storytelling, finger plays, and language enrichment are also provided. Other programs Families for Literacy Program (FFL), Kids in Partnership Program (KIPP), and training for high school tutors who will teach at-risk elementary school students. NDA members' responsibilities include tutoring students, assisting classroom teachers, and participating in after-school programs. The Service League of San Mateo County, Redwood City, Calif., utilizes members to work with inmates at the county jail. These members will assist in the FATHERS (Fathers As Teachers: Helping Encouraging Reading Supporting) program, that encourages responsible behavior by promoting literacy among the incarcerated and their families. NDA member's responsibilities include developing class plans and course outlines for the program, participate in the selection and testing of the inmates, provide instruction to a class of no more than 15, and tutor inmates on an individual basis. Members also assist the inmates in establishing positive, supportive relationships with family members and other community members, and generally work towards improving the educational levels of the inmates. St. Charles Elementary School is a K-8 Catholic Christian educational institution dedicated to the formation of the whole child to meet the challenges of today’s world. It is operated by the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines. It has a coed student body of more than 300 students who come primarily from Hispanic and Filipino backgrounds. With love and understanding, the school guides each unique individual toward a positive self-concept through spiritual, intellectual, psychological, emotional, physical and sociological development. NDA members’ responsibilities include tutoring students, assisting classroom teachers, and participating in after-school programs. Members may also assist with parental involvement programs that encourage parents to participate in their children’s education.

Watsonville, Ca

Located just miles from the beach, Watsonville is an exciting location where volunteers can make a difference in the lives of residents and also enjoy the sunshine and beauty of this coastal town. Volunteer opportunities include one-on-one and small group tutorial, and academic and social support for students and their families. Bilingualism (Spanish) is a plus.

Moreland Notre Dame School, Watsonville, Calif. is located in the Monterey Bay area of central California. The student population is diverse, drawing on the diverse population of the agriculturally based region. With the goal of meeting the needs of individual children from kindergarten through eighth grade, emphasis is placed on recognizing and addressing learning challenges, one-on-one and small group tutorial, and academic and social support for students and their families. As a Catholic school, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, California Province, the faculty and staff, in partnership with parents, work collaboratively to provide students with the foundation of Christ-centered faith and life-long learning.

Freedom Elementary School is situated in the community of Freedom, between the Watsonville Airport and the northern city limits of Watsonville. The school serves approximately 600 K-5 students, including one Special Day Class. 76% of the children come from families who are employed in agriculture and live at or below the poverty level. Freedom School serves as a vital center for the community, providing access to educational, social, and recreational activities for adults as well as children. The NDA members provide small group and individual tutoring as well as support services to students in the classroom and in the afterschool program. There is the possibility of creative planning of a class in the after-school program.

Lakeview Middle School was built in 1994 and was once the site of a California Indian village and burial grounds. It is nestled at the foot of the coastal mountains at the edge of the Pajaro Valley. Several small lakes encircle the northern edge of the campus with both Kelly Lake and College Lake providing prominent views from the campus. This public school serves primarily in grades six through eight. The Notre Dame AmeriCorps members provide small group and individual tutoring as well as support service to students in the classroom and in the afterschool program. There is the possibility of creative planning of a class (music/arts/crafts/yoga/newspaper club/etc) in the after-school program.

Solano Summit Academy serves students in the middle grades (6-8). Many are expelled, on mandatory placement, on probation, experiencing behavior problems, disengaged learners, or are habitually truant. Solano Summit Academy has a low student/teacher ratio providing opportunities for individual attention to the academic and behavioral needs of the students. Students are taught to accept responsibility for their actions and to develop a level of maturity so that they can return to a regular school campus. Specifically addressed in the school are standards based academics, life skills, anger management, developmental assets, and individual goal setting. Individual student and family counselling is a major component of the school. This position is a good fit for an enthusiastic, self-starter, with compassion for helping others.

The Second Harvest Food Bank, Watsonville, Calif. is one of the oldest food banks in the United States. Second Harvest's mission is to educate and involve individuals to end hunger and malnutrition on the Central Coast. Member agencies shop at the Second Harvest Warehouse and take food to the low income families and individuals who are seeking it. To assist member agencies in accessing food, Second Harvest is introducing a new program that delivers food, bread and produce to them. This change requires support in training the pantry workers, child-care center teachers, and homeless feeding program managers to make use of deliveries that provide them with more food than they can usually carry to give to those they serve. Another mentoring program for both staff and volunteers introduces them to computer use and helps them with literacy in both computer language and English language. Volunteers will be involved in a new project of designing a nutrition project with students at Renaissance, an alternative high school setting.  Finally, Second Harvest has a "Hot Line" that is open eight hours each day and assists callers in locating food, shelter and other necessities.

Watsonville High School, Watsonville, Calif. is an expansive open campus located in the heart of city. Traditional sports and clubs programs take place on campus along with small school academies. The academies are programs in which students can obtain work experience and build capacity in their respective area of career interest. For example the Health Academy provides students with a gateway to degrees in health related fields. The Video Academy, in addition to its gateway mission, is a multi-media and journalism program that delivers school and community news. Watsonville High Schools Mello Center Theatre is a state of the art theatre that serves the community throughout the year. Watsonville High School is a unique environment that seeks to cultivate the potential of all students.

Santa Cruz County Head Start
The Head Start Family Literacy Program addresses parent’s unmet literacy needs and leverages their growing literacy to positively impact their children’s education. The program encourages parents as their children’s first teachers; fosters the nurturing relationship of parent and child through planned activities which increase literacy at home and in school; promotes literacy-rich Head Start classrooms; and motivates parents to acquire skills, training, and/or education to secure employment and to be positive role models and advocates for their children.
The Head Start Family Literacy Program is requesting AmeriCorps members to serve as literacy mentors for Head Start children. They will receive orientation and training on how to participate in classroom literacy activities and engage children in one-on-one conversations and activities that help them expand their vocabulary, expression and comprehension. They will also receive training on classroom management and conflict resolution to provide much needed support for classroom teaching staff in meeting all the challenging needs of our children and families. They will also work with our Literacy Coordinator to provide resources, training, and support for parents in the areas of supporting their children’s emergent literacy, locating community resources for adult education, and accessing tutoring opportunities.
