Since my second AmeriCorps year of service, I've graduated with my AA degree in Elementary Education from Dundalk Community College in the Winter of '01. For the past two years, I've been pursuing a combined BA/MAT degree from UMBC in American Studies and ESL and I am currently have two jobs at UMBC. I'm partially in charge of UMBC's popular Conversation Partner Program and am also doing private ESL tutoring there. I'm currently doing AmeriCorps Outreach as well. I also volunteer at NDA-Boston's Cardinal Cushing High School every summer and shall be working there in ESL after my 2008 graduation! I can't wait! (3/17/04) Amy Potthast- Since I left St. Julie Asian Center, I spent the 2001-2 school year back in China, teaching English and pedagogy, and studying Chinese at Sichuan University in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Also travelled, met the new Peace Corps Volunteers and returned to my Peace Corps site several times to see old friends and students. One highlight of the return trip was getting a chance to see a former education student in his own English classroom, teaching middle school students, using teaching methods that other Volunteers and I had modelled when he was one of our students (and a trouble-maker!). I am in my second year of grad school at UMass Amherst. (1/18/04) Amy Potthast and Doug Geier are happy to announce that they are getting married, July 2, 2006, near Asheville, NC. Friends from NDMVA are welcome to come -- please contact Amy and Doug for directions. Amy manages the Public Service Careers and Graduate Education programs of Action Without Borders/Idealist.org. She travels frequently and would love to hear from NDMVA friends. (1/10/06) Suzanne Pregot (1/16/04) Jessica Propp- The two years I served with this program were the best of my life. I made some wonderful friends who I still see very often and I was able to help alot of adults begin the steps to obtaining their GED. I also found an inner strength I never knew I had. I love this program so much that after my two years of volunteer service were up I went to work at the National Office as the Recruitment Coordinator and I've been working there ever since, although this year is my last year at the National Office (it's time to move on. The years I have spent with NDMVA have been the highlight of my life. (1/16/04) R Cara Redgate - I think my two years serving as an Americorps member were the most exciting years of my life. It was my first step away from home and the challenges I faced were both rewarding and life-altering. I would and have recommended serving as an AmeriCorps member to anyone who isn't quite sure what they want to do in their lives. My years as an AmeriCorps member have allowed me the experience I needed to be able to work with children in any capacity. If I could have served a third year, I probably would have. (1/4/06) Cinnamon Reiheld- I began Americorps the fall after graduating from the University of Toledo. I completed two years, working in Washington D.C., Boston, MA, and Columbus, OH. During my Americorps experience I learned that working on social justice issues, particularly those effecting women, was what I wanted to do career-wise. After finishing Americorps, I received my Master's in Women's Studies from The Ohio State University. Currently I am the Senior Women's Counselor at Sarah's Inn, a domestic violence agency in the Chicago suburbs. I provide individual and group counseling to women survivors of domestic violence as well as outreach to the community. I live in Chicago and my cat, Ella, and I lead a very comfortable life. Some of my greatest friends have come to me through my time as an Americorps volunteer. It was a great experience and I would encourage anyone looking to do community-oriented, work with great rewards, that NDA is the place to start your search. (3/15/04) S Amy Jo Scoca(1/16/04) Laurel Searles (3/17/04) Brenda C. Simms- Hello everyone it was so good to have recieved Human Kind in the mail today. I was always amazed at the blessing that NDA has made in the many lives that you all have touched. Being a mother of six children and staying at home with them for many years. I never imagined being able to go back into the working world. But because NDA had confidence in me when I did not have it for myself after two years of service. I'm now working as a Family Service Coordinator for St.Veronica's HeadStart Center. I have been full time there now going on three years. I enjoy what I'am doing very much, because it allows me to give back what NDA has given me. I work very close with the families of the HeadStart Program trying to enpower our parents, and to make sure the children have what they need to continue in the program. I really do thank and appreciate everything and opportunity that NDA has given me. May GOD continue to TOUCH and BLESS everything that NDA seeks to do. Thank You Sincerely, Mrs. Brenda Simms (4/20/04) Kathleen (McLean) Smith - After I left Baltimore, I moved back to Lubbock, TX where I began a non-profit career in Event Planning. After that I moved to Dallas where I joined a large law firm and continued my career in the corporate world. Soon after moving to Dallas, I met and married my husband, Michael and became a Mom (Cooper, age 2). I am a stay-at-home Mom and we are expecting baby #2 in March 2005. Kelly Ann Smith (3/17/04) RaeLynne Snyder (7/6/04) Ethan Stanton - I am currently living in Querétaro, Mexico, two hours from Mexico City, where I am teaching English with the Shamrock English School. My students work in companies around Querétaro. I've just finished a semester teaching English to college students at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, also in Querétaro. Allison Stebe- Once I finished my year in Redwood City, I drove home to Massachusetts. The trip home was great and full of life long memories. I lived at home for a few months and have recently moved up to Vermont. I am looking for a job as fulfilling and meaningful as Americorps! In the mean time I am coaching high school lacrosse and working at a local Performing arts center. (3/15/04) Sara
Strausser - Greetings to all my fellow NDMVA
alumni! Like others who have posted on this website, I can say that my
years with Notre Dame Americorps were some of the best of my life; AmeriCorps
led me toward an education in social work that will enable me to continue
serving others throughout my career. My fellow community members from
the Stoughton Street house in Dorchester will be part of my life forever,
and my time in Hartford showed me that I could build a life in the big
city far from my family. After my second year, I completed a Master of
Social Work degree at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. I am still
living in the St. Louis area, and I am a case manager with high-needs
youth in the foster care system. St. Louis is a great place to be and
I think it might be ideal for a new NDA site! Take care, everyone! (12/12/05) Scott
Stuart- After my two years of service, I applied
the education award towards a Masters degree in music therapy at Illinois
State University in Normal, IL. I completed my clinical internship at
Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL. I am now working as a full-time
music therapist for a hospice program in the south suburbs of Chicago.
I provide music therapy to people with terminal illnesses as a complement
to the physical, psychosocial and spiritual care offered by the hospice
team. My two years as a member of Notre Dame-Americorps member were truly
instrumental in my personal and professional development. Sarah Sullivan- My NDA experience continues to shape my perspective and experience. I am so grateful to have served in Apopka, FL. The experience changed my life and I still feel that I am part of the family I found there. I am in my first year of teaching high school reading, working with marginalized students. My choice to become a teacher was absolutely influenced by my service in NDA. (4/25/04) Cynthia
A. Sutphen - After serving for one year in Cincinnati, OH I served
a second year in Indianapolis, IN as an AmeriCorps Leader with the Indiana
Reading Corps. As a leader I acted as a liason between Indiana AmeriCorps
programs and the Governor's office as well as assisting the director of
the Indiana Reading Corps(a program coaching elementary aged students
in reading). My office was located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue
University in Indianapolis which caused me to start thinking about using
my education award to attend graduate school. I researched Indiana University
programs and found one perfect for me. I graduated from Indiana University
- Indianapolis in 2003 with a Masters in Public Affairs and concentration
in Non Profit Management. I also received my certficate of Fundraising
from the Center on Philanthropy Fundraising School. I was hired shortly
after graduation by Indianapolis Opera as the Development and Community
Relaitions Coordinator and was then promoted to Annual Fund Manager. Even
though I was never very fond of animals, I now have two small and very
spoiled dogs and I am training to run my first half-marathon in May 2006.
My work with Notre Dame Americorps continues to impact my life as I strive
to make my community and world a better place to live. (12/12/05) T Elizabeth
Treganowan - I just returned to my hometown of Boston after spending
a year in South Central, California. I would recommend AmeriCorps to anyone!
I had the most challenging and effective year in LA. I will never forget
my school site I worked at, and all the kids that will be in my thoughts
and heart forever. Thank you NDMVA for making this year unforgettable.(8/14/06) U Alyson Utterback - I am going to do another year of NDA in the Cincinnati area. V Joshua
Rex Vanderhoof Colleen Vogt- After NDA, I studied theology to prepare for ministry in the Church. I earned a Master of Divinity from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA (like one of my NDA community members (and now site director) Sr. Ann Howard, SND). I was discerning a vocation to religious life even before NDA and now am a postulant with the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, PA. I live and pray with the sisters and work in their spirituality programs. Hope all my fellow alumni are well and that those currently in the program are having an enriching year. Peace, Colleen (3/15/04) W Curtis Wade III - I'm feeling de ja vu all over again. Except now I've just finished my Masters in English at Colorado State University and instead of heading to Boulder to be an Americorps, I'm heading to Estes Park, CO to do another 1700 with a Public Allies(/Americorps) at Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center (www.eaglerockschool.org). Eagle Rock is a private, residential, alternative high school, so I'll be once again immersed in education and education reform related issues. (8/30/05) Kelly
Wintroath Meier- After my year of service, I used my award to
attend law school. After graduation, I took a position as Executive Director
of St. VIncent de Paul in Dallas, Texas. I just got married and my husband
and I have relocated to Lincoln, NE. DengWol- the service was the path that opens doors to the members and the communities around us. (4/27/04) James C. Wolf- After my two terms in AmeriCorps I was hired by my partner agency, Corryville Catholic, to run their PreSchool/Kindergarten After School Program. While working at Corryville I am also attending graduate school at Xavier University where I am working towards a Master of Education. Currently, I am running for city council in my home city of Mt.Healthy, Ohio. Dreda N. Wright- It was a challenging position I undertook at the Notre Dame Education Center. I was responsible for teaching Math to adult students whose goal it was to earn the GED. This position was quite rewarding and I appreciated knowing the students were very serious in their endeavors. Many students went on to receive their diplomas following the administration of the GED test locally. It was my pleasure to have been a part of a fine organization. (6/9/04) Y Anna Yangco- I'm what you call a "lifer..." I started a Project HOPE in 1999 and I have been working here ever since. NDA provided me with a true service learning experience. (4/13/04)
